Shop by health condition

Below is a list of health problems / limitations frequently associated with brain injury.  Glance over the list.  When you find a topic of interest, click on it to see product suggestions.

Categories will naturally overlap.  Not all items are available (yet) at B Independent.

General Information

Don't be ruled by chaos!  Memory and organizational problems are not included in the above list, though these accompany almost all brain injuries.  Helpful aids are available.  Look in Med Aids, Organizers, and Timekeepers

Generally useful items can be found in any of our Support departments.  Although only some of these products are designed to overcome specific difficulties, all are sturdy and easy to use.

Live Smart

You don't always need special equipment to deal with a limitation. Sometimes simply changing the way you do something can solve the problem.  For instance,

  • Buy wrinkle-resistant clothes so you don't have to iron.

  • Prepare meals in advance so you don't have to cook when tired.

  • If getting into/out of the bath is difficult, shower instead.

Actions quickly become automatic.  By rethinking old habits, however, you may discover alternatives that are quicker, easier, or less exhausting.

Bending Difficulty

Life is difficult if you cannot easily retrieve something from the floor.  If bending hurts, or you just can't do it, these aids will help:

  • Reachers (Pick up objects with a gripping jaw controlled by a trigger.  Jaw closes when trigger is squeezed.)

  • Long-handled tools

  • Waist level laundry baskets

  • Socket raisers

Hard of hearing or deaf

Living in a world of muted sounds is frustrating - and isolating.  Here are some aids that can help:

Incontinence

These products make life more hygienic, while preserving dignity:

  • Hand-held urinals

  • Bed and chair protectors

  • Pads and pants

Limited dexterity

Bring life within reach, using:

Limited mobility

Is moving around awkward? painful? unsafe?  Help is available:

One-handed

Being one-handed in a world designed for two-hands presents constant challenges.  Here are some products that can help:

Swallowing Difficulty

The "simple" act of eating can be anything but easy.  However, the right kitchen aids simplify the process:

Tremors

Weak muscles

Weak/painful grip

Weak vision or blind
